Components of a Nurse Call System

Nurse call systems have become almost standard equipment in local hospitals, senior living centers, nursing homes, and regional medical facilities. These systems allow patients to alert staff quickly when they have a need and get a rapid response. This offers a better patient experience and allows patients peace of mind that help is only a "call" away.

Dome Lights

Dome lights are the lights placed outside of a patient's rooms that serve as visual indicators when a patient has pressed the nurse call button and needs assistance. These lights make it easier and faster for staff to locate the correct room. Most use LED lights for optimal visibility. Many of these lights can exhibit different colors for different needs and can be programmed for different flash patterns to indicate a specific need, too.

Master or Nurse Console

The master staff station is usually centrally located within the healthcare facility. This is where every call is received and responded to by an attending staff member. Its main purpose is to be the hub of calls so that a staff member can prioritize them and direct responding staff to where they need to go. This station is where anyone can gather information about the state of the patient and resolve the call once responded to.

Patient Station

The patient or room station is where the nurse call button and the intercom are located in a patient's room. This allows for direct communication with the patient and helps to eliminate the numerous trips  back and forth. They are installed by the patient's bedside for easy access and are activated by a press of a button or the pull of a cord. There are usually located in other places in a patient's room, such as by the toilet, shower or seating area.

Pillow Speaker

Most nurse call buttons are now located on a pillow speaker. This is a hand-held device that is multi-functional, allowing for the patient to control many things in their room, such as entertainment, lights, blinds, frosted glass and HVAC. This improves the patient experience and makes it necessary to only have one remote the patient can use for all needs. Plus, pillow speakers allow patients who may not be able to lift their arm or twist their bodies to reach the nurse call button for easy access to help when they need it.

Code Stations

A code station is simply a station with only a button that can be used to place a code call. These are usually customized to the needs of the healthcare facility. Codes such as Code Blue or Code Pink are the most common codes programmed. A code button is connected to every station to alert everyone when pressed.

Wearable Pendants

Many healthcare facilities are moving towards the use of wearable pendants by residents, especially those in assisted living facilities, so that they can call for assistance no matter where they are located, be it outside in the garden or in a basement. This allows for peace of mind for both residents and staff as they can move around more freely knowing that help is just a press of a button away.
