Grand View Hospital Case Study

Grand View Hospital added a large expansion to their hospital to better serve their surrounding community. Taking notes from other larger healthcare systems Grand View didn’t cut any corners with the buildings look, feel and capabilities. They rethought how staff interact with patients and how to improve a patients stay which led to the development and “all-in-one” TV and digital whiteboard solution that not only provided a source of entertainment but, access to the patients care plan and control over their room all from the patient’s remote.
Project Description:
Grand View Hospital (GVH) recently added an addition to their hospital named the “Pavilion” with the goal to set the bar high for patient experience and care. This initiative involved a deep look at what patients look for including privacy, comfort and clear communication of their care plan. They decided a focal point of these goals should be the TVs. Not only should the TVs provide a source of entertainment but show details about the patient care plan, control the rooms temperature, lights and doors. These TVs should be the centerpiece and control center of the room.
Approach:
After analyzing staff workflow and the patients’ stay, a list of what could be combined or improved was created. The list included, improve patient’s access and visibility to their care plan, give the patient control of their room’s environment to minimize calls to staff and to improve comfort, reduce duplication of work for staff and lastly automate processes for staff.
This led to GVH to work with Symtech Solutions to create an “all in one” solution. Symtech reached out to Vizabli, where the creation of the “Combo Whiteboard” started. Combining traditional digital whiteboard features and TV capabilities. This then progressed to more integrations including with Jeron’s Nurse Call system, Midmark’s Real Time Locating System (RTLS), Z-Band IPTV, Meditech and Siemens Controls. These integrations allowed the Vizabli to intake mass amounts of data and process them to display on the boards in an automated and seamless way.

Implementation:
Grand View Hospital chose to put 75” touch screen devices at the footwall. For entertainment, Z-Bands IPTV solution was used to distribute Comcast’s channel lineup to each device. Patients are able to scroll through and watch their favorite channels from their Jeron Nurse Call pillow speaker. Additionally, from their pillow speaker they could control two sets of lights in their room and change their privacy glass on their door from clear or frosted. Integration with Siemens room controller, allows patients to use the pillow speaker to view the current temperature of the room and adjust it to their preference.
Staff also can perform the same functions as the patient but could do it directly on the Combo Board with its touchscreen. Staff can bring up digital education videos and documents to share with the patient. When staff place orders or update the patient information like dietary restrictions within Meditech, it would then be replicated and displayed on the Combo Board automatically. Staff can assign themselves to the room from their workstations or on the Combo boards directly. The care team displays on the board showing their first name, title and photo. A drawing area is available on the Combo Board which allows staff to write notes or to draw things out to help with their explanations. Staff wear Midmark RTLS badges that automatically cancel nurse call events when they enter the room. Additionally, their name will pop up and display on the Combo Board for the duration of them being in the room.

Outcome:
As staff and patients become more used to the new system and workflow. Staff have seen time savings in updating their chart and eliminating having to go into the room and fill out the same information. The RTLS system has also saved them more time with canceling alerts automatically. These time savings allow them to spend more time with the patient.
Patients are impressed by the new features and believe it helps feel more comfortable during their stay. Since they don’t have to make requests to staff to adjust temperatures, lights, privacy screens and more they feel more empowered. Patients especially like to see the care team assigned to them and what their schedule looks like when it comes to orders. The information is a big hit with family and friends visiting the patient knowing who is taking care of them and what tests are being run.
